The Norma Koenig
Scholarship Fund
Helping Christian educators attend
regional AUCE education events.
The Mid-Atlantic Association of United Church Educators is honoring the late Rev. Norma Koenig with a scholarship fund for Christian educators in her name.
Norma Koenig (1922-2006) was a long-time member of the Association of United Church Educators. Those of us in the Mid-Atlantic region have fond memories of her regular presence at our Mid-Atlantic AUCE meetings held each spring. Norma was that gentle teacher who helped us to look at topics and concepts in other ways, many times bringing new insights for everyone to ponder, and increasing the life of our discussions.
An ordained UCC minister and Christian educator, Norma made numerous contributions to the Church. For over forty years, she wrote and edited church school curricula for the United Church of Christ and its ecumenical partners. She was the editor of JED Share magazine, an educational resource for churches supported by twelve denominations. Norma authored more than thirty books published by seven major American presses, including One Night, which received the New England Publisher’s award for Best Children’s Book. Norma is remembered specifically by members of AUCE for her colorful workshops, storytelling and writing.

Professional, clergy, and lay Christian educators worked together in a playful, creative, and creating fashion during this event. Many ideas and visions were shared in small group sessions on practices of faith. Participants remained busy while creating community and connecting worship with all that was celebrated together during the three days. Many thanks go to the Planning Team, to our leaders, Ken Ostermiller and Anabel Proffitt, and to all of the volunteers who made this gathering a experience of true sharing together.
An offering was taken to begin the Norma Koenig Scholarship Fund that will assist educators in attending regional AUCE meetings. A brochure that describes the fund and the procedure for sending contributions is available by clicking next to the AUCE logo above.
