INTERNATIONAL PILGRIMAGES WITH YOUTH

PILGRIMAGE TO CHINA

FEBRUARY 28 - MARCH 17, 2003

In her book "Walking a Sacred Path: Rediscovering the Labyrinth as a Spiritual Tool," Lauren Artress remembers when scientist Rupert Sheldrake has asked, "Where should people should begin to deal the global crisis?" He answered, "I would change tourism into pilgrimage, help tourists become pilgrims." "While tourists observe, pilgrims participate," Artress reflects, "When traveling as pilgrims we come with vulnerability and humility... The shift from tourist, who comes with an interested eye, to a pilgrim, who comes with a searching heart, makes all the difference in the world."

International Pilgrimages with Youth is an opportunity for young people to experience different lands and cultures and peoples as a holy journey. Our intention is to come with an open and searching heart and to seek transformation in ourselves. In this sense, a pilgrimage for youth is a rite of passage.

This initial phase involves 11 members of the United Church of Christ, lay and clergy, from across the country. Our 18 day pilgrimage will witness to the living church in China, the history of mission work there, and the "God-giftedness" of all with whom we come into contact. This first pilgrimage is a training trip involving youth leaders who will lead a pilgrimage to the same region within 24 months of their return.

Join us in our holy walk by reading our daily journals, offered by pilgrims to China.
